Helen Crawford Textile and Mixed Media Artist
More Info
I studied Fine art and Textiles during teacher training. Later, I completed City and Guilds Embroidery, Parts 1 and 2 at Malvern Hills College and graduated with an HNC in Stitched Textiles at GLOSCAT. I studied Textiles and Fine Art during the B.Ed course at Avery Hill College; later I completed City and Guilds Embroidery Parts 1 and 2 and the HNC Stitched Textiles at GlosCAT.I am inspired by the seasonal and atmospheric changes in the light, colours and textural details noticed on walks in favourite unspoilt places, including woodlands and hillsides of the Malvern Hills, and in the Brecon Beacons, and wild coastlines of the Outer Hebrides and Cornwall, in addition to poetry by Robert Frost, Pauline Prior-Pitt, John Clare and Robert MacFarlane.
I fill sketchbooks with watercolour, ink and dry media drawings. From these evocative reminders I compose my textile landscapes and seascapes. I paint, felt or silk paper backgrounds, further developed with a rich palette of hand dyed silk fibres, free machine embroidery and collage. I also enjoy painting with a range of water based mixed media, including watercolours, acrylics and pastels as well as printmaking.
I take part in Herefordshire Arts Week Open Studios and won the People's choice Award in the h-Art Open Exhibitions in 2010, 2011, and 2012, and the Textile Prize in the Oriel Cric Open Competition 2025. I take part in the annual Textile exhibition at the Weavers gallery Ledbury during the Poetry Festival.
I stock framed and mounted textiles and paintings alongside giclee prints and cards. I welcome visitors to see my work at home by appointment.
My work is available in Aetheria Gallery, Great Malvern and Oxenham Galleries, Hereford and Leominster.
