Ceramicist Painter
More Info
This body of works comprises mostly of Lornas pit fired vessels along with paintings and pottery resulting from her recent experiments using locally mined natural ochres from the Forest of Dean. The pit fired vessels are wheel thrown stoneware clay which has a coating of Terra sigillata applied prior to bisque firing. They are then placed in a pit filled with wood and fired to produce a reductive atmosphere which creates wonderful array of patterns mirror-black patches and unpredictable results which make this type of firing very immediate and exciting.
Lornas natural ochre paintings e.g. “Spruce Ride In Spring” comprise purely of the ground ochre and linseed oil reminiscent of cave painters use of ochres and binders such as tree sap. These ochres; yellow, english red and caput mortuum are ground down by mulling and mixing with linseed oil to make her own oil paints. Lorna is also using these ochres in her specially formulated earthenware glazes for subtle colours and effects.
