How The Humble Woodshed began

I’m Mike, the maker behind The Humble Woodshed. In 2019, after a difficult personal period, I rediscovered my love of woodworking as part of my recovery. With the support of my family and an incredible GP, time spent in the workshop became both therapy and creative outlet — and The Humble Woodshed was born.

Today my small garden workshop in Gloucestershire is where every piece is designed and handcrafted by me. I work mainly with locally sourced hardwoods, celebrating the natural grain, texture and character of each piece of timber. The wood itself guides the design, meaning no two creations are ever the same.

My work combines traditional woodworking with modern resin techniques to produce distinctive clocks, home décor and functional art. Each piece is individually made rather than mass-produced, with careful attention to detail and finish. I aim to create items that are not only beautiful to look at, but built to be enjoyed and used every day.

Sustainability is important to me. Wherever possible I use responsibly sourced or reclaimed wood, giving new life to materials and bringing a small piece of nature into your home.

I’m proud to be part of the Made in Ross co-operative, a collective of local artists and makers exhibiting in The Market House in the centre of Ross-on-Wye. Sharing space with other creatives and meeting customers face-to-face is one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.

The Humble Woodshed continues to grow, but the heart of it remains the same: thoughtful craftsmanship, honest materials, and the simple joy of making.
