I love painting and consider it to be my main creative endeavour because it's so difficult and therefore always a massive challenge. Luckily other things creep in as well to give me a bit of a break, particularly drawing but also stained glass and printmaking.
The most difficult question to answer for me is ‘What sort of paintings do you do?’ They’ve been described in the past as magical realism and it sort of fits but more recently an artist friend said they were ‘storytelling’ which definitely fits well. I think I’m always trying to convey something. That’s where the excitement lies for me. I’ll never get used to the struggle of getting things right but what would be the point if there wasn't a struggle?
Drawing is a pleasure. Printmaking and stained glass for me are more about craftsmanship and creating a design, then gradually changing it but only ever so slightly! Still difficult but you have to make choices about glass, shape, ink and colour before launching into the making. Painting - that’s a whole different ballgame! i don't think I will ever think any of my paintings are finished because I could go on changing them forever.
