Enamel Artist and Tutor
More Info
Katie Sanderson is a Forest of Dean based enamel artist and enamelling tutor.Magical, mystical, unpredictable, absorbing, transforming, these are all words that come to mind when Katie thinks about enamelling and in particular her approach to this ancient art form.
Shortly after first being introduced to enamelling by her Mother, and enamel artist Dilys Fisher, Katie moved away from home taking a kiln and a box of enamel powders with her. She then became mainly self taught through embracing the freedom of the kiln, its outcomes not always being predicable and from then on she has explored enamelling through experimentation.
Katie has significantly expanded on that first box of enamel powders, and now brings in many techniques to her pieces. One of her projects focussing on dogs has seen her sketching many breeds and then colourfully producing them in vivid enamel, with pattern and texture. In this area of her work she focussed on finding a profile image in her sketches that perfectly captures that breed. She loves the sketching process and then the challenge of capturing key elements of each breed in the enamelling. Katie particularly enjoys working with clients who have an idea in mind but are willing to give her the freedom to develop a method of transferring that idea into a piece of enamelled art.
Her latest work explores landscapes, land, sea and sky placing layers of enamel over copper and working with transparent enamel to allow the copper to peek through in places. Giving depth to the work it is also a technique that stretches the enamel and sometimes in the moments of burn away magical colours emerge.
Katie has been enamelling for 18 years and teaching enamelling for over 8 years, taking her kilns around the country and sharing her knowledge and passion for this additive art form.
